Career Mentor Information

What is a “Career Mentor”?

Career Mentors are professionals who share knowledge and experience about their field with one of our students.

How does the Career Mentoring program work?

A Dreamer will meet with you at your workplace for approximately five sessions, each lasting about one hour.  You will be provided with a thematic curriculum of suggested activities for each session, each designed to help the Dreamer learn about your career from a particular perspective.

Why should I become a Career Mentor?

One of the most powerful aspects of our program, and one of the greatest challenges, is the opportunity to give our Dreamers a vision for a future not limited by what they see around them.  Career Mentors tangibly demonstrate an incredible array of opportunities that help our Dreamers to set high goals for themselves.

What if my career involves confidential information or interactions?

This is not a problem! We can work with you to make alternative arrangements to work around whatever limitations you might have.

Who can be a Career Mentor?

We’re looking for a broad array of professionals to give our Dreamers as many options as possible.   If you care about youth and can commit about 10 hours of your time over the next 4-12 weeks, you can be a Career Mentor!

How do I become a Career Mentor?

  1. Complete and submit a Volunteer Application.
  2. Attend a New Mentor Training session (held on the 4th Monday of every month).
  3. Attend an initial meeting with “I Have a Dream” staff and the Dreamer to coordinate logistics.  After this meeting, the five sessions begin!
